Changes to Cheque services
With cheques now making up less than 0.1% of retail payments and more digital payment options available, Australia’s cheques system will start closing in 2028.
This means that cheques written after 30 June 2028 will no longer be valid. However, cheques written before this time can still be processed until 29 September 2029.
Our priority over the next few years is to help make this change as smooth as possible for our customers, and to help you with other payment methods that meet your needs.
What's changing
New Accounts Opened (from 19 May 2025)
- Cheque books will no longer be available on new accounts opened on or after 19 May 2025.
Existing customer accounts (from 19 May 2025)
- Replacement cheque books will no longer be issued automatically on your existing account. If you require a replacement cheque book, you can contact us to order one.
There’s no change to how cheques are deposited into your account or to how you make payments using cheques.

No longer using your Cheque Book?
Switching from cheques to electronic payments, helps reduce fraud by providing a full audit trail, as well as reducing the risk of incorrect or lost payments. If your account has a cheque book feature that you are no longer using, call us or visit a branch to cancel this feature on your account.
To safely destroy your cheque book, you can drop it into your local branch.
